Library and Learning Resources
Programs and courses in the Library and Information Studies (LIS) Department have been developed for students who wish to:
- Take a general education course, LIS 001, that is transferrable as a general elective to the UC system, CSU GE pattern E eligible, and COD GE C4.B eligible.
- Improve the critical research and information evaluation skills that students need to succeed both academically and in their chosen career paths.
- Earn a non-credit certificate in research or take open-entry, open-exit non-credit courses to improve their basic research skills.
Students should consult with an advisor or a counselor to determine if the courses offered by Library and Information Studies are appropriate for their individual academic or career objectives. Counselors are available both in-person and online via appointment. LIS 001 An Introduction to Basic Research,Skills Units: 3
Appropriate for students pursuing almost any major, this course presents an introduction to the basic concepts and tools used in research. Emphasis is placed on how to develop a research topic and how to locate, evaluate, use, and cite relevant information. Students will learn to develop strategies for finding relevant research information in different modalities to address a variety of information needs.

Applicable to almost all majors, this course is designed to support college students to develop or strengthen their information competency and academic research skills. In this course, students will learn what it means to be information competent, how to obtain assistance in completing research assignments, and the different types of information sources.
