Language and Thought Certificate of Competency

The Language and Thought Certificate of Competency critical thinking skills about language use and personal experience conveyed through writing. The certificate examines language in context as well as how personal experience can be used to support arguments. This certificate asks students to examine the political, social, and cultural meaning behind language and narratives. It explores word choice and how the meaning of language changes depending on setting, and how the way in which a story is told reveals knowledge and insight. Attention begins at the individual word level then moves narratives.

Upon satisfactory completion of this program students will be able to:

  1. Examine individual words and how their connotations changes depending on context and setting.
  2. Examine how language shapes people’s perceptions of society.
  3. Explore how narratives and personal experiences have social, professional, and academic value.
