Advanced Academic English as a Second Language Noncredit Certificate of Competency

The noncredit Certificate of Competency in Advanced Academic ESL provides students, prospective employers, and others with documented evidence of persistence and academic accomplishment in English as a Second Language. The certificate demonstrates satisfactory completion in a sequence of six courses in the ESL program designed to enable non-native English language students to develop college-level oral, aural, reading, and written fluency.  

Learning Outcomes

Upon satisfactory completion of this program students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate comprehension of and ability to read critically a variety of authentic texts.
  2. Demonstrate ability to write expository essays.
  3. Demonstrate ability to use various grammatical structures to establish sequence and coherence.
  4. Speak with increasing confidence, fluency, and control in formal and informal oral communication.
  5. Recognize and correct pronunciation and speech problems that impede successful communication.
