Fire Technology Certificate of Achievement
Fire technology is the study of the organization and function of fire prevention and suppression techniques; fire behavior, combustible materials, extinguishing agents, hazardous and toxic material; fire protection techniques and systems; fire command and fire management (supervision).
The certificate of achievement is designed to provide students with skills necessary for employment or advancement as an entry-level firefighter. Students earning the certificate may also choose to continue their study toward an associate or baccalaureate degree in the field.
Past recipients of the COD (College of the Desert) Certificate of Achievement in Fire Technology have obtained positions as firefighter, firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and paramedic. This program follows the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) model from the National Fire Academy.
This program prepares individuals for an entry-level career in the fire service by providing a foundation of core concepts, practices, vocabulary, culture, safety and requirements for the fire service. Public and private careers can be pursued with completion of this certificate program.
Courses listed in the Fire Technology Certificate of Achievement will also count towards the Associate of Science in Fire Technology (transfer preparation and employment preparation).
Learning Outcomes
Upon satisfactory completion of this program students will be able to:
- Display aptitude and knowledge necessary to qualify for employment in fire prevention and fire suppression industries.
- Exhibit a working knowledge of the various aspects of the Fire Service to include but not limited to Fire Department structure, operations, educational and experiential requirements for fire service jobs.
